Volunteer Program

Volunteers on retreat
Franciscan Outreach Volunteers is a year-long (renewable) program that provides opportunities for direct service to people who are homeless in Chicago.  Since 1976 volunteers have helped provide hospitality, emergency and long-term services in the spirit of St. Francis.  We are looking for the transformation of ourselves and our society.

Franciscan Outreach Volunteers is part of the Franciscan Outreach Association.  Volunteers serve alongside staff and community members to help serve those who are marginalized.

For more information on Franciscan Outreach, including tours, guest interviews and statistics, see our slideshow here.

Volunteers live in intentional community with 12 others from the US and Europe, participating in retreats, weekly reflections, meetings, and community nights. Each volunteer has a private room.  There are shared bathrooms, community rooms, laundry and a kitchen. Volunteers receive:

  • Room and Board (Tour here)
  • $200 monthly stipend
  • Health Insurance
  • 3 Retreats
  • Orientation
  • Individual Mentor (former volunteer)
  • Weekly Community Nights
  • Weekly Reflections
  • 2 days off per week
  • 10 vacation days
  • Opportunity to stay on for a 2nd year
Services are open 365 days a year.  Therefore we do not have 1 official start and end date for our program.  Volunteers transition in and out of the program during the month of July.
